Challenging suburban typologies

This bold and unusual house in Norwood, Johannesburg, challenges the suburban typology. The design places the house right on the boundary edge, maximising the courtyard garden while ensuring a strong connection to the street. Each window is carefully positioned to allow for surveillance, ensuring privacy, capturing views, and maximising sunlight — especially in winter. The raw materials of stock brick, roughcast plaster, and mesh-panel burglar bars were chosen for their robustness in response to the urban context.
