Designing South Africa’s new universities
2013 marked a significant moment in South Africa’s higher education landscape with the establishment of Sol Plaatje University in Kimberley and the University of Mpumalanga in Mbombela. As the first new public universities founded in post-apartheid South Africa, the projects were initiated through parallel national architectural competitions to shape their emerging campuses. Schaerer Architects assisted Prof Paul Kotze in coordinating these competitions, managing submissions and supporting a transparent and fair process for participating architects.
