Designed by children

The Mimosa Alleyway project reimagines a school drop-off zone as a shared public space shaped by children’s voices. Rather than a simple upgrade, the initiative places children at the centre of the design process — challenging conventional boundaries between public and private space, and recognising them as active urban citizens. Over two years, a broad community of students, educators, parents, designers, and city officials has collaborated through research, dialogue, and making. Children’s explorations extend beyond the physical site to themes of light, sound, belonging, and ecology, while engaging wider urban issues such as safety and climate. The project demonstrates how child-led design can foster more inclusive, imaginative, and socially responsive public spaces.
