Reorienting tradition

The St Andrew’s School Hall presented a complex brief: double its size while retaining its location and honouring the original structure. The solution reorients the hall by 90 degrees, extending it westward through a new wing. Defined by large concrete arches, floating ceilings and generous openings, the addition contrasts deliberately with the traditional form of the old hall. It opens seamlessly to landscaped gardens, allowing school events and ceremonies to extend outdoors. In doing so, the project marks a confident departure from the campus’s prevailing Cape Dutch language.
