St Andrews School for Girls | Science Block, 2021

Educational | New Building

Balancing tradition and modernity

The Science Block at St Andrew's School for Girls houses seven new Science and Biology laboratories. It rethinks the traditional classroom model, creating informal spaces for meeting, pausing and learning within the public areas of the building. Stripped forms and clean lines reference the school’s Cape Dutch heritage while establishing a distinctly contemporary identity. Designed to challenge entrenched hierarchies typical of school buildings, the block encourages new patterns of interaction. Careful orientation maximises natural light and solar gain, while passive ventilation chimneys within the service core enhance cross-ventilation throughout the classrooms.
