Acoustic architecture

Schaerer Architects served as site agent for Cohen and Garson Architects on the Chris Seabrook Music Hall and Digital Arts Building at WSOA. These two infill buildings are located within the Arts Precinct at Wits University. While simple in form, the monolithic volumes are animated by striking brick detailing and a dramatic cantilevered staircase that introduces movement and complexity. The integration of timber acoustic panels in the Music Hall presented a significant technical challenge, requiring the careful coordination of acoustics, aesthetics, and functionality. This was undertaken in collaboration with audiovisual and acoustic consulting engineer Ivan Lin, ensuring the hall’s suitability for a wide range of musical genres and performances.
